BTA2023 President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to fiscal discipline, urging deputy ministers to ensure that public funds serve the interests of Ghanaians rather than government officials.
Speaking at Jubilee House on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, during the swearing-in of 13 deputy ministers and a minister of state, President Mahama highlighted his administration’s dedication to responsible spending and a lean government.
“Our decision to run a lean government is not just about reducing the number of ministers or staff at the Presidency,” he said. “It is based on the principle that public resources must be used wisely.”
Focus on Financial Discipline
The President stressed the importance of balancing government spending with the tax burden on citizens, ensuring that public investments directly benefit the people.
“Public funds must go primarily into investments that directly benefit Ghanaians. Those who oversee these funds must not be the biggest beneficiaries,” he warned.
His comments come amid his administration’s move to reduce political appointments, assigning deputy ministers only where necessary and cutting the number of presidential staffers compared to previous governments.
This emphasis on efficiency and transparency reflects the government’s ongoing effort to streamline operations while ensuring that national resources are used to enhance the well-being of all Ghanaians.
