In a major development for Ghana’s extractive sector, Azumah Resources Ghana Limited has officially begun construction of the Black Volta Gold Mine, a flagship mining project located in the Upper West Region. The move comes after the company secured full project financing from its shareholder base and resolved a protracted legal dispute with a former contractor.
Described by the company as the start of “a new era for Ghana’s mining industry,” the Black Volta Project signals Azumah’s transition from exploration to full-scale development—a step that promises to bring wide-ranging benefits to the local economy.
“We’ve spent years exploring, planning, and working with communities in the Upper West Region,” said Prof. Prince Ofori Amponsah, Country Lead for Azumah Resources. “To see construction finally underway is deeply fulfilling. This is more than a mining project—it’s a shared opportunity for job creation, innovation, and long-term regional growth.”
Construction Phase to Deliver Over 1,000 Jobs
Azumah Resources anticipates creating more than 1,000 jobs during the mine’s construction phase alone, with hundreds of permanent roles to follow once the mine becomes fully operational. In addition to direct employment, the company is prioritizing local content engagement, particularly in:
-
Logistics and haulage
-
Food and catering services
-
Agricultural produce supply
-
Power and fuel delivery
-
Infrastructure support and security
This strategy, the company says, is intended to embed the project into the fabric of regional development.
Overcoming Legal and Operational Setbacks
The road to construction has not been without obstacles. Azumah Resources previously faced contractual delays and legal action from Engineers & Planners Co. Limited (E&P), which had been awarded the initial civil works contract. The dispute escalated to international arbitration and resulted in delays to the project’s original schedule.
“Despite the setbacks, our focus never shifted,” explained Rob Ciccini, Project Director. “We engaged stakeholders, realigned our partnerships, and secured renewed commitments from our investors. Today’s announcement is the result of that perseverance and the unwavering support of the Government of Ghana.”
Since parting ways with E&P, Azumah has worked closely with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure all compliance and regulatory approvals are secured.
Commitment to Responsible and Inclusive Development
Azumah Resources emphasizes its identity as a Ghanaian-led company with international backing, committed to responsible mining, community engagement, and sustainability. The Black Volta Gold Mine is expected to not only generate significant national revenue but also serve as a catalyst for economic empowerment in the Upper West Region.
“We believe mining can be done responsibly—by Ghanaians, for Ghanaians,” said Prof. Amponsah. “This project reflects that vision.”
Groundbreaking Ceremony on the Horizon
A formal groundbreaking event is currently being planned in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. The ceremony will bring together traditional authorities, local government, and development partners to mark this historic moment.
