BTA2023 A 46-year-old businessman, George Adu-Twum, has appeared before the Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding a police officer of GH¢72,000 under the pretext of securing two auctioned vehicles.
Adu-Twum, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretences, was granted bail of GH¢75,000 with two sureties by the court, presided over by Isaac Addo. The case has been adjourned to April 7, 2025, with the judge ordering the prosecution to comply with the rules of disclosure.
Details of the Case
According to Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori-Appiah, the prosecutor, the complainant is a police officer residing at Weija SCC, Accra, while Adu-Twum lives in Weija Gbawe, Accra.
In 2021, the police officer’s relatives needed a Toyota Pickup and a Hyundai i30. Through a mutual friend, he was introduced to Adu-Twum, who claimed to have access to auctioned vehicles.
The complainant met Adu-Twum at Abelemkpe, where the accused pointed out a Toyota Hilux and a Hyundai i30, claiming they were part of an auction. He insisted that immediate payment was required as other buyers had shown interest.

Adu-Twum assured the complainant that the vehicles would be ready within a week but later went into hiding.
Arrest and Partial Refund
The accused was eventually arrested on January 15, 2025, after years of evasion. During investigations, he refunded GH¢25,000, leaving a balance of GH¢47,000.
The court will continue hearing the case on April 7, 2025, as the prosecution prepares further evidence.
