Digital Entrepreneurship on the Rise in Ghana

In a rapidly changing economic landscape, Ghanaians are embracing digital entrepreneurship as a path to financial independence and business growth. What began as side hustles for many young adults has evolved into full-time careers, with content creators transforming their talents and interests into profitable digital enterprises.

From Passion to Profit

Platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook have lowered the barrier to entry for aspiring entrepreneurs, offering them a global stage to showcase their skills and products. With a smartphone and a creative spark, these digital entrepreneurs are building personal brands and businesses that defy traditional employment norms.

Turning Skills into Ventures

Take Ubaida Musah, for instance. A former receptionist from Botwe, Greater Accra, Musah now runs a beauty channel where she shares makeup tutorials with a growing online audience.

“When I started, it was just to help my friends who wanted to learn makeup but couldn’t afford professional classes,” Musah said. “But as my followers grew, I realised the potential to turn this into a business.”

Musah’s journey reflects a key entrepreneurial lesson: Identify a gap, offer value, and scale through digital platforms. Today, she earns from training sessions, platform revenue, and brand collaborations, demonstrating the potential of digital content as a scalable business model.

Building Digital Trust and Personal Brands

For Naa Afortey, a nail technician from Tema, the shift to digital has been equally transformative. After years of offline work, she began sharing her creations on social media and quickly gained traction.

“When I posted my price list on TikTok, it got over 40K views. I realised that transparency and authenticity are critical for building digital trust, which is the foundation of any successful online business,” she said.

Monetising Digital Skills

For Ghanaian digital entrepreneurs, monetisation strategies go beyond ad revenue. They include:

  • Affiliate Marketing

  • Live Streams with Donations

  • Brand Sponsorships

  • Fan Subscriptions

  • Content Licensing

However, these ventures come with challenges, including high data costs, equipment expenses, and digital fraud. Yet, the drive for financial independence and business growth continues to push creators to innovate and adapt.

The Future of Digital Entrepreneurship in Ghana

With a growing ecosystem of creators, business owners, and digital innovators, Ghana’s entrepreneurial landscape is evolving. The opportunity to leverage technology, build personal brands, and reach global markets is more accessible than ever.
