The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), in collaboration with garage operators, has launched the Fleet Pool Management Service (FPMS) to support entrepreneurs in the transport sector and enhance economic activity in the tourism industry.
Empowering Entrepreneurs in the Transport Sector
The FPMS aims to provide reliable, safe, and efficient transportation for tourists, creating business opportunities for local transport entrepreneurs. This initiative aligns with GTDC’s mandate to operate a fleet rental service, addressing the mobility needs of the tourism sector while supporting private-sector growth.
“GTDC, per our mandate, we are supposed to have a car rental service, but we do not have the cars. Management had to devise an innovative strategy to ensure that we can actually pursue that particular service we are mandated to do,” said Professor Kobby Mensah, CEO of GTDC.
Benefits for Transport Entrepreneurs
-
Revenue Sharing: A “win-win” business model that supports entrepreneurs.
-
Training and Support: Regular training and capacity-building for drivers.
-
Wide Market Access: Opportunity to serve tourists, airport pickups, and city tours.
-
Regulatory Compliance: Support with documentation and compliance processes.
Fleet Pool Model: Building a Strong Network
The FPMS will connect fleet owners and drivers with a larger market, offering a range of vehicles, including cross-country cars, saloon cars, and buses for tourism and city tours. This model provides reliable and safe transport options for travellers, enhancing the overall tourism experience.
Creating Jobs and Supporting Growth
This initiative is expected to create job opportunities for drivers, support small businesses, and boost economic growth by improving transportation infrastructure.
“Tourism is not only about site attractions. It’s about experiences. Mobility is central to that experience. We must ensure that movement is safe, efficient, and enjoyable,” said Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships
GTDC is committed to building strong public-private partnerships to deliver high-quality, affordable, and robust tourism transport systems, aligning with the Black Star Experience – a symbol of Ghanaian hospitality, integrity, and innovation.
