Ghacem Champions Green Entrepreneurship with GH¢1 Million

Ghacem Champions Green Entrepreneurship with GH¢1 Million Investment in Ghana’s “Tree for Life” Initiative

In a groundbreaking move blending business innovation with national development, Ghacem Ltd., Ghana’s leading cement manufacturer, has committed GH¢1 million to the government’s flagship “Tree for Life” reforestation initiative, positioning itself as a key player in sustainable entrepreneurship in Ghana.

The initiative, launched under President Mahama’s administration in 2025, aims to restore 7 million hectares of degraded land and plant 30 million trees nationwide. It forms part of the government’s broader environmental sustainability drive to combat illegal mining (galamsey) and restore Ghana’s natural ecosystems.

Eco-Innovation Meets Social Impact

At the core of Ghacem’s contribution is the launch of its newest product: ‘Ghacem Eco Cool’, Ghana’s first eco-friendly cement engineered to reduce CO₂ emissions without compromising construction quality. The company has pledged GH¢1 from every Eco Cool bag sold—with a target of one million bags—toward the reforestation initiative.

But in a bold entrepreneurial move, Ghacem isn’t waiting for sales to accumulate. At a presentation at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the company handed over the full GH¢1 million upfront to fast-track tree-planting efforts.

“We are not here just to present a cheque. We are here to redefine what it means to be a responsible business,” said Dr. Frank Huber, Managing Director of Ghacem. “Eco Cool is more than a product—it’s part of a new business model that prioritizes environmental responsibility as a pillar of long-term growth.”

Dr. Huber was joined by Mr. Kwasi Kyere, Commercial Director, and Mr. Frank Antwi Agyapong, Marketing & PR Lead, in what was hailed as a defining moment in corporate environmental leadership in Ghana.

Driving Entrepreneurial Responsibility in the Construction Sector

Ghacem’s approach underscores a powerful shift in how Ghanaian businesses—especially within industrial sectors—are rethinking their role in national development. By embedding sustainability directly into their value chain, Ghacem is turning environmental action into a competitive advantage.

“We believe that entrepreneurship must lead the way in tackling climate change,” added Mr. Kyere. “Eco Cool is our way of demonstrating that you can innovate, remain profitable, and serve a national cause—all at once.”

This forward-thinking mindset is what sets Ghacem apart as a model of impact-driven entrepreneurship, aligning corporate objectives with societal and environmental needs.

Government Praises Private Sector Leadership

Yusif Sulemana, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, received the donation and commended Ghacem for becoming the first private entity to respond to the Ministry’s reforestation appeal at such a scale.

“What Ghacem has done goes beyond corporate social responsibility—it’s entrepreneurial foresight,” he noted. “It takes a certain calibre of business to step forward with a solution-first mindset, and that’s exactly what Ghacem has done.”

The Deputy Minister emphasized the government’s readiness to explore further partnerships that promote eco-friendly building materials in state infrastructure projects—bringing public policy in line with sustainable industry trends.

The donation ceremony was also attended by Dr. Hugh Brown, CEO of the Forestry Commission, Mr. Innocent Haligah, Acting Chief Director, and Mr. Joseph Osiakwan, Technical Director for Forestry.

Green Business, Bold Future

By tying product success directly to environmental recovery, Ghacem is rewriting the playbook for entrepreneurship in Ghana’s industrial economy. The Eco Cool cement initiative not only meets the demand for sustainable building materials but also contributes meaningfully to restoring Ghana’s forests and fighting climate change.

“We see this as the beginning of a long-term strategy where innovation meets impact,” said Dr. Huber. “This is how we future-proof our business—and our country.”
