Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the Government of China to construct a modern market in Aflao, the bustling border town located in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
The agreement was officially signed on July 7, 2025, by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, at a brief ceremony in Accra.
Describing the initiative as a major economic intervention, Mr. Ablakwa stated that the project fulfills a 2024 campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama to the people of Aflao.
“The new Aflao market will not only uplift local livelihoods but further cement Aflao’s status as a thriving West African trading hub,” he emphasized.
Aflao is Ghana’s busiest eastern entry point and serves as a key corridor for cross-border trade between Ghana and neighboring Togo. The new market is expected to significantly enhance regional commerce by linking activities between Ghana’s Ho Market and Lomé’s vibrant trade centers in Togo.
The planned project mirrors the successful redevelopment of the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast—also financed through a Chinese grant during the Mills-Mahama administration. Mr. Ablakwa noted that the Aflao market follows a proven model of infrastructure-driven economic inclusion.
Construction of the Aflao market is expected to begin later this year. Once completed, the facility will provide traders with modern infrastructure, promote safe and organized trading, and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The Government of Ghana continues to prioritize strategic investments in markets, transport, and trade infrastructure to promote regional integration and sustainable development.
