Wilson, 48, who weighed 340 pounds, was sentenced in January to six years in prison, with one year suspended to probation, after being convicted of reckless homicide, according to WMAQ.
Incident Details
The tragedy unfolded on April 25 in Valparaiso, Indiana, when police responded to a distress call about a child who was unresponsive and had no pulse. Upon arrival, officers found bruising on the boy’s lower neck and chest. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Dakota was transported to the hospital, where he later passed away.
Wilson initially told authorities that Dakota had run away but was found at a neighbor’s house and brought back home. She claimed he continued “acting bad”, threw himself on the ground, and insisted he was leaving.
According to court documents, Wilson stated that while trying to prevent him from leaving, she either tackled him or they fell to the ground, but her intention was to restrain him. She admitted to sitting on his midsection for approximately five minutes.
When Dakota stopped moving, Wilson assumed he was pretending. She reportedly asked, “Are you faking?” before rolling him over and realizing his eyelids had turned pale. She then attempted CPR and called 911.
Medical Findings
Two days later, on April 27, Dakota was pronounced dead at South Bend Memorial Hospital. An autopsy revealed he suffered from:
- Mechanical asphyxia (restriction of airflow leading to suffocation)
- Liver and lung hemorrhaging
- Organ and soft tissue damage
The manner of death was officially ruled as homicide.
Neighbor’s Account
A neighbor later informed investigators that Dakota had approached her house before the incident, asking her to adopt him because his parents hit him in the face. However, the neighbor stated she did not observe any visible injuries.
Shortly after, Wilson arrived and took Dakota back home.
Weight Disparity
At the time of the incident, Dakota stood 4’10” and weighed 91 pounds, while Wilson was 4’11” and weighed 340 pounds.
Her sentencing brings closure to a case that has drawn significant attention, raising concerns about child welfare and foster care oversight.
