Lemfi Secures $53 Million to Expand European Footprint and Accelerate Global Growth

Lemfi, a remittance startup serving African immigrants in 22 countries, has raised $53 million in a Series B funding round, setting the stage for its expansion into Europe. The funding, led by Highland Europe, marks a pivotal moment in Lemfi’s journey to reshape the global remittance landscape.

Key Players Behind the Funding

London-based Highland Europe, a firm specializing in growth-stage investments for startups generating over €10 million in annual revenue, spearheaded the funding round. Existing investors, including Endeavor Catalyst, Left Lane Capital, Palm Drive Capital, and Y Combinator, also participated, bringing Lemfi’s total funding to $85 million since its inception in 2019.

Founded by Ridwan Olalere and Rian Cochran, Lemfi has rapidly scaled to become a leading player in the remittance industry, catering to the unique needs of African immigrants worldwide.

Europe: The Next Big Leap

Lemfi’s expansion into Europe is set to begin next month, following its acquisition of a yet-to-be-named company based in the Republic of Ireland. This acquisition will allow Lemfi to independently operate in the European market, building on its prior partnership with Modulr.

With its revenue model centered on transaction fees and foreign exchange spreads, Lemfi aims to strengthen its foothold in the competitive remittance space by offering localized services tailored to its growing user base.

Transforming the Global Remittance Landscape

Unprecedented Growth

Lemfi’s growth trajectory is nothing short of remarkable. The startup now processes $1 billion in monthly payment volume, a significant leap from the $2 billion annual volume recorded in 2023. Over the past two years, Lemfi has:

  • Doubled its user base.
  • Doubled its revenue.
  • Doubled its transaction count.

A key driver of this success is Lemfi’s expansion into the Asian corridor, which has contributed $160 million in monthly transaction payment volume (TPV). According to co-founder Ridwan Olalere, this market has seen consistent month-on-month growth of 30% since its launch last year.

Strategic Global Expansion

Lemfi has been methodical in its expansion, targeting high-demand remittance markets. After entering the US in 2023, the company ventured into China, India, and Pakistan in 2024. These strategic moves have been supported by hiring C-suite executives from major companies like Terrapay, DeliveryHero, and OPay, adding deep expertise to its leadership team.

Localized Offerings and Customer Focus

With its latest funding, Lemfi plans to secure additional licenses and forge new partnerships, ensuring compliance and scalability in its operational markets. The company is set to roll out a customer card in the US, UK, and Canada, enhancing its service portfolio. To sustain its rapid growth, Lemfi is actively expanding its workforce to meet rising demand.

Why Lemfi Stands Out

Lemfi’s commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions has positioned it as a leader in the remittance industry. Its ability to adapt to diverse markets, coupled with its focus on seamless cross-border transactions, sets it apart in a competitive landscape.

As the startup embarks on its European journey, it is poised to redefine the way African immigrants and other underserved communities send and receive money globally.
