M-KOPA, a leading digital financial services provider, has reached a remarkable milestone of serving 5 million customers in Kenya, as revealed in its 2024 Impact Report. The company has played a significant role in economic development, generating over 16,000 employment opportunities and contributing Sh17.2 billion ($133.4 million) in various taxes to the country’s economy.
Expanding Financial Inclusion and Economic Opportunities
Founded in 2011 by Nick Hughes, Chad Larson, and Jesse Moore, M-KOPA has been instrumental in providing affordable access to smartphones, digital loans, data services, and e-motorbike financing. Through its partnership with TURACO, the company also offers free hospital coverage, further strengthening financial inclusion across Kenya.
According to Martin Kingori, General Manager of M-KOPA Kenya, the company remains committed to creating economic opportunities and improving financial accessibility. Their local smartphone assembly factory, launched in 2023, has already created 325 jobs, primarily benefiting youth and first-time job seekers. Plans are in place to expand this workforce to 500 positions by 2025.
Innovation in Local Smartphone Production
M-KOPA’s assembly facility has manufactured over 1.5 million smartphones, including the M-KOPA X20, the company’s first branded device featuring embedded digital financial services. With an ambitious goal to manufacture and sell 10 million locally produced smartphones by 2027, M-KOPA is demonstrating its commitment to making technology more accessible to Kenyans.
Strengthening Sales and Expanding Mobility Solutions
The company’s vast sales network includes over 14,000 paid agents, with plans to scale up to 20,000 by late 2025. Additionally, M-KOPA has financed more than 1,500 e-motorbikes, supporting sustainable transportation solutions across the country.
A Pan-African Impact
Beyond Kenya, M-KOPA operates in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Uganda, collectively serving over 5 million customers. To date, the company has disbursed over $1.5 billion in credit, primarily targeting underserved individuals without access to traditional banking services.
M-KOPA’s integrated approach of combining technology access, job creation, and financial inclusion continues to address key economic challenges. With tax contributions spanning corporate, withholding, VAT, import, and PAYE categories, the company has become a vital part of Kenya’s financial ecosystem.
By focusing on local production, workforce development, and economic empowerment, M-KOPA is not only bridging the financial inclusion gap but also cementing its role as a transformative force in Kenya’s digital economy.
