MTN Ghana Cuts Tariffs Following VAT Reforms

MTN Ghana has announced a reduction in tariffs across all its products and services, aligning its pricing structure with recent changes to Ghana’s Value Added Tax (VAT) regime.

In a public notice to subscribers, the telecommunications company said the tariff adjustments take immediate effect and reflect amendments to the VAT law, following government-led reforms aimed at easing the tax burden on households and businesses.

The tariff reduction comes on the back of sweeping VAT reforms announced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) after the passage of the Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151), which takes effect from January 1, 2026.

VAT Reforms Drive Price Adjustments

Under the new law, the VAT rate has been reduced to 20 per cent, while the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, introduced during the pandemic, has been abolished. The reforms are part of broader efforts to simplify VAT administration, improve compliance and reduce costs across the economy.

The GRA has also raised the VAT registration threshold for businesses dealing in goods from GH¢200,000 to GH¢750,000, a change expected to exempt many small businesses from mandatory VAT registration.

In addition, the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) and Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) levies have been re-coupled, allowing businesses to claim input tax credits. The VAT Flat Rate Scheme has also been abolished to create a more unified VAT system.

Consumers to Benefit from Lower Costs

MTN Ghana said the tariff reduction reflects the impact of the VAT reforms on its pricing structure and operational costs, noting that the company is passing on the benefits of the tax changes directly to customers.

The move is expected to provide some relief to consumers, particularly at a time when households continue to adjust to higher living costs.

GRA Urges Stakeholders to Prepare

Meanwhile, the GRA has urged VAT-registered taxpayers and stakeholders — including employers, importers, exporters, accountants and tax consultants — to familiarise themselves with the new VAT framework ahead of its full implementation.

The Authority has encouraged the public to seek clarification through its Taxpayer Service Centres or official communication channels.

MTN Ghana has advised customers to visit its official website for details on the revised tariffs, reaffirming its commitment to affordability and value in line with national fiscal policy changes.
