BTA2023 Nyarko Ampem: Deputy Finance Minister-Designate Pledges to Boost Revenue and Cut Costs
The Deputy Minister-Designate for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to enhancing revenue generation while implementing cost-cutting measures to improve fiscal stability.
He emphasized that strict financial discipline is essential for achieving the ministry’s fiscal targets, warning that without such measures, the government would struggle to fund its programs effectively.
Fiscal Responsibility and Government Efficiency
During his vetting by the Appointments Committee, Mr. Ampem addressed concerns regarding the financing of government initiatives.
“The President’s decision to reduce the number of ministers by 24 is a clear indication that the government recognizes the economic challenges we face. This move sets the tone for all sectors to follow suit,” he stated.
Commitment to Education Funding
Mr. Ampem also spoke about the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, reaffirming his dedication to ensuring adequate funding for education.
“With the outcome of the education forum, if Ghanaians reach a consensus on a particular direction and it becomes government policy, I will fully support its implementation,” he added.
While acknowledging concerns about the cost implications of Free SHS, he clarified that his primary focus is on improving its implementation and efficiency rather than reducing expenditure on the initiative.
As the Finance Ministry seeks to balance revenue generation with prudent spending, Mr. Ampem’s remarks underscore the government’s broader commitment to economic sustainability and responsible governance.
