Based in Masindi, Uganda, his company specializes in the cultivation and processing of moringa, a superfood celebrated globally for its health benefits. Despite the promise, his entrepreneurial path has been filled with unexpected hurdles, resilience, and hard-earned lessons.
Spotting Opportunity in Moringa
Ruge’s journey into agriculture wasn’t accidental. He saw a rising global demand for moringa and recognized the unique climate advantages Uganda offered for growing this nutrient-rich crop. Moringa’s leaves and powder are used in health supplements, beauty products, and food industries around the world.
“It was a clear opportunity,” Ruge explained. “But having an idea and making it work on the ground are two very different things.”
The Challenge of Convincing Farmers
One of Ruge’s first obstacles? Convincing local farmers to grow moringa. Unlike staple crops like maize or beans, moringa was unfamiliar to many Ugandan farmers. It took time, patience, and education to build trust and demonstrate the plant’s economic value.
A Breakthrough—and a Setback
Raintree Farms landed a massive $1 million order from the U.S., a major breakthrough that validated their efforts. But what seemed like a dream opportunity quickly turned into a lesson in risk management.
Due to unforeseen export restrictions and geopolitical challenges, the contract fell through, leaving the company in a difficult financial position. Add to that the struggles with funding, and Ruge found himself battling to keep the business afloat.
