Collins Sefa The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has partnered with E4Impact Ghana and the Africa Entrepreneurship School to launch the INSPIRE Project, a new initiative designed to equip small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with the practical skills needed to grow in Ghana’s competitive business landscape.
The project was unveiled during the Inspire Business Seminar at UPSA, which brought together entrepreneurs, academics, and industry leaders to explore sustainable strategies for SME development.
Practical Tools Beyond Capital
According to Dr. Andrews Ayiku, Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of UPSA’s MBA Impact Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, financial assistance alone cannot guarantee SME survival.
“Entrepreneurs need mentorship, coaching, and practical tools. Through the Inspire Project, we are helping businesses design strong revenue models, understand cost drivers, and build lasting customer relationships,” he said.
From the Africa Entrepreneurship School, Cleo Bowen stressed the importance of long-term guidance for business owners.
“This program provides tools that SMEs can apply immediately. Our goal is to ensure entrepreneurs not only gain knowledge but also receive continuous coaching to sustain growth,” she explained.
Linking Academia With Industry
The Dean of UPSA’s School of Graduate Studies, Dr. Michael Kwame Mickson, said the project reflects the university’s commitment to combining academic learning with practical industry exposure.
“UPSA’s graduate programs are designed to align with industry needs. Initiatives like the Inspire Project ensure that our students and entrepreneurs benefit from both theoretical knowledge and real-world practice,” he noted.
Monthly Seminar Series
The INSPIRE Project will run as a monthly seminar series, each session tackling key challenges for SMEs such as access to markets, financial management, and adapting to Ghana’s evolving 24-hour economy initiative.
“SMEs form the backbone of Ghana’s economy but face hurdles like limited market access, weak financial structures, and inadequate managerial skills,” Dr. Ayiku added.
“This project goes beyond funding to provide mentorship, case studies, and hands-on training for long-term sustainability.”
Free and Open to All Entrepreneurs
The initiative is free and open to entrepreneurs across sectors. Future sessions will feature industry experts and provide networking opportunities for SMEs to connect, collaborate, and expand their reach.
As Ghana positions its economy for continuous activity under the 24-hour agenda, the INSPIRE Project aims to give SMEs the tools and support they need to remain competitive and resilient.
