Vodafone Partners Amazon Leo to Expand 4G & 5G Satellite Connectivity in Europe and Africa

Mobile operator Vodafone has signed a strategic agreement with Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network, Amazon Leo, to connect 4G and 5G mobile masts in remote parts of Europe and Africa — a move that could reshape rural connectivity across the continent.

The partnership will allow Vodafone to use satellite broadband to link hard-to-reach base stations directly to its core network, bypassing the high cost and logistical challenges of laying fibre infrastructure in isolated regions.

High-Speed Broadband from Space

Amazon Leo is part of Amazon’s multi-billion-dollar satellite initiative designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet from space. Unlike traditional geostationary satellites, LEO satellites orbit much closer to Earth, significantly reducing latency and improving performance for real-time applications such as video conferencing, cloud computing, and mobile data traffic.

Under the agreement, Amazon Leo will deliver download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) and upload speeds of up to 400 megabits per second (Mbps), providing sufficient capacity to support 4G and 5G backhaul in underserved communities.

Rollout Plan: Europe First, Africa Next

Vodafone plans to begin deployments in Germany and other European markets later this year, before expanding into Africa through its subsidiary, Vodacom.

According to Vodafone, Amazon Leo already has more than 200 satellites in orbit, with hundreds more manufactured and awaiting launch — positioning it as a scalable alternative to terrestrial infrastructure in rural and remote areas.

Strategic Shift in Telecom Infrastructure

The partnership signals a broader shift in how telecom operators approach network expansion. Instead of relying solely on fibre or microwave links, satellite backhaul is emerging as a faster and potentially more cost-effective solution for bridging connectivity gaps.

Separately, Vodafone is also exploring direct-to-device satellite connectivity via a partnership with AST SpaceMobile, which would allow standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites without specialised hardware. A launch timeline for that service has not yet been announced.

What It Means for Africa

If successfully scaled, the Vodafone–Amazon Leo partnership could significantly narrow Africa’s digital divide, improve rural broadband access, and accelerate digital inclusion. For businesses and entrepreneurs in remote communities, stronger connectivity could unlock access to digital finance, e-commerce, education platforms, and global markets.

With satellite technology becoming increasingly commercialised, this deal may mark a turning point in how Africa’s next wave of telecom growth is delivered — not just from the ground, but from space.
