BTA2023 Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, has declared that the 5G service will be available beginning November 1, 2024.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful stated that the essential structures have been put in place for the service to begin.
The government had announced that the 5G service would be available by the end of this year.
What is 5G service?
5G service has been defined as the Fifth Generation of Wireless Technology, providing faster internet speeds, upload and download speeds, more reliable connections, and increased capacity.
5G networks use the same radio frequencies as their predecessors, 3G, 4G, and 4G LTE networks, which served the majority of mobile phones globally.
However, advances in speed, latency, and bandwidth have resulted in 5G networks having quicker download and upload times, stronger connectivity, and more reliability, making them the inevitable successor to 4G technology.
It is claimed to be ten times quicker than the 4 G Plus service.
Government on 5G roll out
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful previously stated that the government has worked with seven industry companies to create a common infrastructure for 5G services, with the goal of providing inexpensive and high-speed mobile broadband services throughout Ghana.
During a Meet-the-Press event earlier this year, she stated that the 5G service is projected to provide various benefits to Ghanaians, such as better data speeds, lower latency, and greater connection.
Citizens will be able to gain more efficient and effective access to digital services such as healthcare, education, and finance.
5G service provision and consortium of companies
The government has granted a 5G licence to The Next Gen InfraCo NGICs, a new shared infrastructure company co-founded by the government and seven other enterprises.
According to the government, the new shared infrastructure would provide affordable 5G mobile broadband services throughout Ghana.
The partners are Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana.
