BTA2023 The growing expense of conducting business at Ghana’s ports has drawn the attention of Romeo Frimpong, Chairman of the Monitoring Committee of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) in the Tema District.
Speaking with host Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom on Burning Issues on Adom FM, Frimpong bemoaned the significant rise in port fees, arguing that it is deterring businesses from doing business at the port.
“I can’t even begin to count how many meetings we’ve had between 2021 and now,” he remarked.
Shipping line costs were GHC 5,000 in 2020, but they have now risen to GHC 13,000, a staggering increase. We’re paying GHC 29,000 for each of my two containers to be verified as the true owner of the goods after duty has been paid.
Frimpong cautioned that if the issue is left uncontrolled, firms will find it difficult to prosper due to the high prices.
“Doing business is getting more and more expensive, and this isn’t what makes it appealing to do business,” he continued.
