FG plans new initiative to ease access to loans for Nigerian SMEs

The Federal Government is set to launch a new initiative aimed at easing the process for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across the country to access loans. This announcement was made by Senator John Enoh, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, during the Renewed Hope Global Virtual Conference 2025.

Recognizing the challenges small businesses face when meeting the stringent loan requirements, particularly from commercial banks, the Minister stated that this initiative would be rolled out in collaboration with First City Monument Bank (FCMB) to simplify loan disbursement for micro and small enterprises nationwide.

“In the coming weeks, we will unveil a partnership that will provide small business owners with an easier path to securing funding,” Senator Enoh said.

Empowering Businesses through the Bank of Industry (BOI)

Senator Enoh also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving financial access for SMEs, emphasizing the crucial role of the Bank of Industry (BOI). He acknowledged the challenges many small businesses face in accessing loans and expressed the government’s intention to work closely with the BOI to streamline loan processes and make funding more accessible.

“The BOI has been a significant player in supporting businesses, but we recognize that many SMEs still face obstacles in obtaining loans. We are working with them to simplify these processes and ensure that funding is within reach for more businesses,” he added.

Commitment to Nigeria’s Industrial Growth

The Minister highlighted the government’s dedication to enhancing industrial expansion, promoting access to funding, and driving digital innovation as key pillars for strengthening Nigeria’s global economic competitiveness.

In line with this goal, he revealed plans to revitalize the country’s export processing zones, ensuring that they contribute more significantly to the national economy. While some targets in oil and gas processing zones have yet to be fully met, the Minister assured that the government remains focused on maximizing the potential of these zones.

Industrial Revolution Work Group: A Step Toward Transformation

To accelerate Nigeria’s industrial growth, the government is forming an Industrial Revolution Work Group, which will bring together key stakeholders such as government agencies, private sector players, and industry associations including the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), NACCIMA, and NASME. The task force will also include representatives from the Ministries of Power, Finance, and Nigeria Customs Service.

“This task force will collectively address industrial challenges and lead Nigeria toward industrial transformation,” Senator Enoh stated, promising that the initiative would significantly impact Nigeria’s industrial sector once operational.

Investing in Innovation through iDICE Initiative

The Minister also highlighted the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) initiative, a $700 million program housed within the BOI. Supported by partners such as Afreximbank, the Islamic Development Bank, and a French financial institution, iDICE aims to empower young innovators and creatives by offering funding and business support.

“iDICE is integral to our strategy to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, helping position Nigeria as a global leader in the digital economy,” Senator Enoh said.

Driving Economic Growth and Sustainability

Senator Enoh concluded by reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial growth. He expressed optimism that these efforts would enhance Nigeria’s economic competitiveness and generate opportunities for sustainable development across the nation.
