GCB Eyes Payment Gateway Role for TikTok Content Creators

GCB PLC has taken steps to position itself as a key partner in Ghana’s fast-growing creative economy, announcing plans to serve as a payment gateway for TikTok content creators.

A delegation led by the bank’s Chief of Staff, Abraham Ferguson, disclosed the initiative during a courtesy call on the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George (MP). The discussions also involved TikTok’s West Africa representative, Ms. Tokumbo Ibrahim, and centred on creating a reliable payment framework for Ghanaian digital creators.

Direct and Transparent Payouts

Mr. Ferguson highlighted GCB Bank’s robust financial infrastructure, noting its connectivity with MasterCard and Visa, which allows for direct payments to cards. He added that the bank is also well-positioned to process payouts through mobile money platforms, bank accounts, and other secure channels.

The proposed framework aims to give creators direct access to earnings from TikTok gifts and monetisation, reducing their reliance on costly third-party intermediaries.

Minister Endorses Proposal

Minister Samuel Nartey George expressed strong support for the idea, stressing that the move would provide creators with a more reliable and transparent earnings channel.

“Using GCB Bank as an official payments partner would eliminate over-dependence on third-party agents that often cut into creator revenues with high charges,” the minister said. “This will ensure Ghanaian talent gets the full value of their work while strengthening confidence in the digital economy.”

TikTok’s Position

Ms. Ibrahim of TikTok welcomed the proposal and pledged to review its feasibility, emphasising the platform’s commitment to exploring secure, regulator-approved payment solutions across West Africa.

Mr. Ferguson noted that if TikTok gives the green light, GCB’s technical team will immediately begin working with TikTok and Ghana’s financial authorities to establish a seamless, secure, and transparent payout system for content creators.

“This integration will formalise the payment process and ensure swift disbursement of earnings to Ghanaian creators,” he added.
