Collins Sefa The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has rolled out a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop under the National Girls-in-ICT Programme in the Upper West Region, aimed at equipping 100 teachers with critical digital skills.
The one-week programme, running from 18th to 22nd September 2025, is taking place at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies in Wa. Participants, drawn from all 11 districts of the region, are undergoing intensive sessions in ICT literacy, coding, and digital skills development.
Upon completion, these trained teachers are expected to transfer their knowledge to 1,000 girls from Primary Four to Junior High School, empowering them with the tools to navigate and thrive in the digital age.
Bridging the Digital Gender Divide
The initiative seeks not only to bridge the digital gender gap but also to inspire and nurture the next generation of female innovators.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq., praised the Ministry for selecting the region as a training hub. He urged teachers to take their mentorship role seriously, noting that their guidance will shape Ghana’s digital future.
The Ministry’s Director of Policy, Planning, Budgeting, Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr. Austin Hesse, highlighted the transformative impact of the program. Since its inception, he noted, over 15,981 girls and 1,292 teachers nationwide have been trained in ICT, coding, machine learning, and other digital disciplines.
Competition and Rewards
The training will culminate in a competition, mentorship sessions, and an awards ceremony. The best-performing 100 girls will receive certificates and laptops, with special prizes for the top three achievers.
Looking Ahead
The Upper West Region’s training follows a similar exercise in the Volta Region, with the Savannah Region next in line to host the program. Mr. Hesse stressed that the Girls-in-ICT initiative provides a unique opportunity to increase female participation in digital technology, ensuring that Ghana builds a more inclusive and innovation-driven digital economy.
