BTA2023 Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership on working to expand cooperation in key areas such as clean energy, defense, and finance. China has committed to supporting Nigeria’s issuance of Panda bonds, which will help fund critical infrastructure projects, the two countries’ foreign ministers announced on Thursday.
Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership in Clean Energy and Defence
Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed various initiatives aimed at addressing regional security challenges. Wang visited Nigeria as part of a broader four-nation tour of Africa, which Beijing sees as a way to deepen its influence on the continent.
Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership in Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Wang’s visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two countries. These include talks at the intergovernmental committee in Beijing last June and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to China in September. As a result, the two nations have upgraded their relationship to a “comprehensive strategic partnership.”
China’s Support for Nigeria
Wang noted that China would carefully consider Nigeria’s request to expand the existing currency swap agreement between the two nations. Additionally, he emphasized China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in strengthening regional peace and security.
Addressing Regional Security Challenges
Wang stated that at the United Nations Security Council, China will consistently vote in favor of African nations. He added that China will continue to work with Nigeria and other African countries to combat insecurity and promote long-term stability through development.
